J.D. is awesome. I agree with Lily. Can't wait to read his book over winter break. Congrats, John!

P.S. - Nice Eazy-E backpack detail, John. I can see you in a rollneck sweater toting that thing around.

And what was additionally great about Stormer was she was the band's songwriter and most talented member, but Pizzazz, Roxie and later Jetta (A British chick in Gene Simmons-ish makeup who plays the sax like Quarterflash's Rindy Ross! Amazing!) kept putting her down, and as they were her only source of community and social validation she rarely had the guts to stand up and say, "Y'all would be nothing without me." Her counterpart in the Holograms was Jem/Jerrica's sister Kimber, who was that band's under-appreciated songwriter. In one of my favorite episodes, she and Kimber both get fed up, leave their respective bands and form a duo together. They record an album and score several hits. It's brilliant. That show had cartoonish dialogue and pacing because... hello, cartoon, but the plotting and characterizations were rather complex for a children's show. It was perhaps not totally unlike the nighttime soaps of its era... Dynasty, Dallas, Falcon Crest, etc. ...My other favorite thing about Stormer was she had this sort of rough-but-vulnerable femininity. If she weren't getting on in years, somebody like Brittany Murphy would be ideal to play her in a live-action Jem & the Holograms movie. Not that I've ever considered such a thing.

This book sounds really great and new. Look forward to reading it.

And thanks for the link, John. Japanese cartoons blow my mind frequently, especially when they are in Japanese.
