Thanks, Ken. I'm sorry this one was a few days late. I love writing them, but they're a real bear to produce on schedule.

I have really been enjoying these posts.

I also agree with what you say about often being unable to get away from writerly obsessions. A lot of my writing is characterized by a few distinct themes and even when I think I'm not writing about my obsessions, I sort of am.

I am a firm believer in no-fault literature, and no-obligation art. And who's to say what Flannery O'Connor would have written had she lived long enough to "move to New Mexico for her health" (or any other odd, unpredictable possibility life might have conjured)? My grandpa's brother, a long-confirmed bachelor from the South, moved to Arizona and married his long-time "girlfriend", (a "closeted but everyone knew" chain-smoking, tennis-playing lesbian) when in his eighties, because she moved there to live out her final days, suffering from lung cancer. Life took her to Arizona. Then life took him to Arizona. No one ever expected them to be married. They really loved each other. She died a few months later.
Some time ago I distilled "After Apple Picking" just because I wanted to and then felt really guilty about doing it, but now I don't feel so guilty.
OK. Good post. Now I'm going to be late for work!
