Lauryn Hill's song was released in 1998. My guess is that she lifted it, too. The earliest instances of the phrase that I can find are as titles of a Diana Ross album (1970), a Donny Hathaway album (1970), and an Earth, Wind and Fire song (1971). It's been used for the title of many songs and albums since then. I wish I knew where the phrase "everything is everything" comes from. I like little tautologies like that. Like, in Faith No More's 'Epic,' he says "What is it? It's it." Of course.
