Amy Tan is kinda insufferable, kinda kinda, but check out her TED talk. She tells about her background/family and explains “where she’s coming from”. I haven’t actually read anything by her (she’s not “my bag, man”) but I did see the movie “The Joy Luck Club” a long time ago and liked it as family story/entertainment. Anyway, she’s also kinda “known, discussed a lot” in Bay Area creative writing bogus shit, old ladies trying to write their memoirs, etc. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I don’t mean to sound too harsh here, it’s just not the kind of thing I particularly want to read.) But a lot of people (old ladies I guess) do. I really shouldn’t ‘talk” like this, I’m gonna be an old lady some day. And probably gonna wanna write “the story of my life”. I’m a bit grouchy this morning, and yet trying to defend Amy Tan, kinda, sorta. Weird. OK.

McCall Smith is sort of a charming douchebag, though. Tan seems insufferable.

I also like that Smith seemed to have used the money from his books to buy a time machine, use it to go to 1976, and buy those pants from Johnny Rotten.
