Harry Houdini on Writing

“No performer should attempt to bite off red-hot iron unless he has a good set of teeth.”

“My professional life has been a constant record of disillusion, and many things that seem wonderful to most men are the every-day commonplaces of my business.”

“Only one man ever betrayed my confidence, and that only in a minor matter.”

“The great day of the Fire-eater–or, should I say, the day of the great Fire-eater–has passed.”

“It is still an open question, however, as to what extent exposure really injures a performer.”

see, I would have thought that quotes by houdini most applicable to writers would be something more along the lines of “For only 5 dollars admission, you can watch me lock myself in chains, swallow the key, climb into a box, be sawed in half, and then miraculously disappear.”

Hey, great pogrom geneticist. I’m looking at the dada engineer and wondering if there’s a wayfarer to set it up so that each textbook generated becomes a separation postbag in a wordpress blog. Any suicides?

Doctorow’s passages on Houdini in Ragtime were badass. When I hear HH’s name I don’t even think GOB-ian illusions anymore. I think about Doctorow’s prose.
