Mean

Mean Monday: Again, Not Really Mean. But Where Are You, Land-Grant College Review?

Where ARE YOU!!???

Again, I am not really being mean here, but where are you people? Your issue number 4 (2007), which I own, is so great. Amazing work by Christine Schutt, Nicholas Montemarano and Kevin Wilson. Actually, all of the stories were rock solid and pushed the limits of what is allowed. And then?? And then -where are you people? Here is a fantastic bit from a deeply disturbing, amazing story called “The Lucky Ones Get to Be People” by Rachel Haley Himmelheber:

I’m fucking my retarded neighbor. His name is Rick, and he lives in 2A.  I live in 11B, upstairs and around the corner. He’s closer to the laundry room. We’ve been together three weeks.
His apartment looks like the apartment of a homosexual man. His sofa print is cabbage roses. The wood is dark and polished, and he owns a tea set. His china is blue and grown-up sized. I had a yellow set when I was ten. I love to have tea parties with him. He lets me pour.
“What kind of tea, Rich?” I call from the kitchen. It’s been overcast for a month now, the sky the dull gray of ashes. Afternoons, the sun is out for thirty minutes and then it disappears. Rich doesn’t want to have sex all the time, which makes him different from other inappropriate decisions I’ve made.
Pleae help me make these people keep putting out this journal. It’s a really really good one. Be mean to them, about not publishing. They should keep publishing shit.

Yeah this is a great question. I remember when their first issue came out. It had Padgett Powell and Aimee Bender, among others. Rad magazines need to not never come out.

I concur. Land Grant is one of the greats. It’s just a shame they don’t come out more often. I think, if I remember correctly, that one of the main editors made a movie that she’s been pedaling to film fests. Hold on…
Yes. Tara Wray made a film called Manhattan, Kansas.
      Cool movie poster here:

Not sure what the excuse is for the other editors.
I think some editors starts journals or web sites and then they make a name for themselves and try to go solo or something. Worked for Dave Eggers and Justin Timberlake.

well, kevin has the insider info. yes it is sad that they are not doing the journal, because i truly think it was ballsier than many many other journals out there. and i miss them. that’s all. daniel wallace? kevin moffett? I liked every story in that issue i got. That happens so rarely. Jesus. Revisiting this issue is killing me.
