Crispin Best Needs Stuff about 1492
Crispin Best is editing a great project called For Every Year. Here’s a bit from his first post in October of 2008, in which he introduces the site:
A story for every year since 1400.
The story just has to be in honour of that year, it doesn’t have to be set then.
So. For example. Chaucer died in 1400, so that explains that. And. The first written record of whiskey appears in 1405, so that explains that.
Pick a year since 1400.
Write a story dedicated to that year.
Ryan Manning‘s story, ‘being nicolaus copernicus,’ is in honour of the year 1473. Here’s a funny excerpt from it to give you an idea:
my feet hurt. i need slippers. have slippers been invented yet. i don’t know. my whole body hurts. this chair is not comfortable. i need an office chair. i need to exercise. i need to stretch. will i ever get laid before i die. will someone write a wikipedia entry about me. will someone write a story about me. on the internet.

Now, the scuttlebutt is, Crispin Best is planning a big thing in honor of the year 1492, which is an important year in history. You know about Columbus and his expedition, sure, but did you know that in the year 1492 the first aboretum to be designed and planted is the Arboretum Trsteno, near Dubrovnik in Croatia?
This special 1492 edition of For Every Year is in need of caretakers, people who can write in honour of the year 1492. So, consider this post to be ‘a polite and gentle call for stories/poems/pieces influenced by or in honour of the year 1492 in any which one way or another.’
