Fresh Literary Magazine Reviews at NewPages
It’s that time again, kids. New literary magazine reviews are filleting eyelids at NewPages. You’ll find reviews of many fine lit mags. I am glad to see that the online venues are reviewed with the print mags, instead of at the bottom of the page. Also, leading off this batch is a review of Abyss & Apex, an online quarterly focusing on speculative fiction and poetry. (Is there such a thing as speculative non-fiction? Would that be science? Philosophy? I’d like to see some slipstream personal essays and such.) Anyway, these magazines are reviewed:
Abyss & Apex :: Arsenic Lobster :: The Colorado Review :: Cutbank :: The Deronda Review :: Dirty Goat :: Fulcrum :: Hanging Loose :: Juked :: The Louisville Review :: Monkey Bicycle :: Ninth Letter :: Paterson Literary Review :: Upstreet
And don’t forget the latest book reviews, too, if you haven’t gotten to them since Blake mentioned those. Good stuff all over the place.
One of my aims with this post was the shameless overuse of the word “review”.
Is it technically Mean Week today? This is a pretty nice post.
Well, that’s too bad. Fuck off.

Did anyone else notice that New Pages was basically 100% breathless about 100% of what they reviewed, more or less 100% of the time? Except for the metered, polite quibble with Louisville Review’s layout, it seems like NP’s thesis is that everything is equally awesome. If this is the case, why review any of it? Why read any one thing rather than any other?

yeah, fuck that.
yeah, fuck that.
Places like NP were a catalyst for me to say what the fuck in a similar way. It would be a good mean week thing. There should be a similar post about NP that is injected into a mean week vein.

I would be interested to read the Mean Week NP post.
I’m in a position here, obviously, as a NP reviewer, but I agree about the ‘everything in the world ever written is fan-diddly-tastic’. Narry a bad review in the whole place. I’m as guilty as any. Although I don’t recall reading anything atrocious the whole time I’ve reviewed for them.
Make the Mean Week NP post, mu’fuckas.

It seems neither adequate nor possible to dissect into discrete ‘properties’ the pattern of an organism which is essentially a unity, a ‘whole’. ,
