The Rule of Threes is Bullshit

1. The Kansas City Public Library’s parking garage. Library patrons voted on which titles got used in the facade. Reminds me of Frank Gehry’s Binocular Building in Venice, Ca. Don’t you think it’d be nice to live inside a cartoon? We could draw ourselves into any scene; and every building could double as an object of desire. If your house could be any book, what would it be?

2. For all of the dorky grammarians out there. (I include myself in that group.) Learn Your Damn Homophones.

3. Last night I watched a great Swedish movie called Let the Right One In. It’s likely the most poetic vampire movie you’ll ever watch.

4. (because the Rule of Three[s] is bullshit) A tiny lil poem from Mary Ruefle, in her book Indeed I Was Pleased with the World. I love it, and I’m very interested in the tense changes.

Bring me a coffee mug from a house
where no one has died. Bring me
an eggbeater, the scissors,
and a very ripe plum.
I am going to make you a toy.
When you play with it,
in my heart I open my sad eyes
and stare.

      @2. Here’s dorky for you: Affect/effect and verses/versus aren’t homophones. Don’t try to fool a linguist. http://twitpic.com/wjym2 Nuff said.

Let The Right One In is a great book and movie. Of course, it should go without saying that the book is vastly superior, but the movie is the one of the best vampire movies I’ve ever seen.

      I agree, those aren’t homophones.
And, I often use the word “affect” (AF-ekt) as a noun.

Sorry, didn’t mean to sound snarky (above).
I like the little Ruefle poem. The line “I am going to make you a toy.” has an ambiguity I like, (i.e. it’s not “I am going to make a toy for you.”)
If my house were a book, it would be “Selected Poems of Emily Dickinson”. Each room a perfect little poem.

What tense changes? Every verb here is in the present.

Or are you using a homonym for tense?

It’s by a guy called John Ajvide Lindqvist. He’s got only other book translated to English, I think. It’s called Handling the Undead and is about zombies. I haven’t read it, though. I liked Let the Right One In a lot, but haven’t read it in English, so don’t know about the translation. Also, and just to totally hijack the thread (homophones!) the guy who directed Let the Right One In also directed a film called Four Shades of Brown (Fyra nyanser av brunt), which is pretty amazing and worth tracking down, esp. if you like Swedish film.

Muzzy, Ruefle writes, “I am going to make you a toy,” as in, in the future I will make you a toy, but then she reverts to present, as if the toy has already been made with “I open my sad eyes and stare.” She doesn’t say “When you play with it, I will open my sad eyes and stare,” which would be more grammatically in line with the “I am going to.”

Thank you for spreading the word about let the right one in, a hollywood remake is on its way as we speak so people have to go and see this Swedish gem before it gets ruined…

I love Let the Right One In with all my heart. That said, I don’t understand the anxiety many have regarding original works and their being somehow sullied by mediocre adaptations. Not only will the first movie still exist and remain capable of being watched; its public estimation will likely *increase* should Hollywood both the remake. At that point, the original will be adored not just as a quality film but as a superior vision. Critics won’t be able to talk about it without slobbering, were they able to before.

Also, the remake might not be bad. Lord knows Naomi’s version of The Ring is a delightful romp.
