‘This book is a catalog of the life project’

I am in a bad writing phase or something. I haven’t been writing very much recently. Instead of writing, I’m reading a lot of things: student papers, composition textbooks, books to review, and then some stuff to make me feel better. Everyone has that shelf or two of books that they read to feel better, I guess. I’m rereading Ben Marcus. Slowly. I just finished Notable American Women a few days ago. Now I’ll start The Age Of Wire And String. I pulled the book off my shelf to look at it and a few pieces of paper fell out.

I might have shown this to a couple of people, so sorry if this is old news.

On the papers is an index. I made an index of all the terms Marcus defines in the book and listed the page number of the definition. I made this index one summer a few years ago. I enjoyed making it. It made me feel busy and involved in something. I don’t know if it is worthwhile. I don’t even know if this makes sense.

But some of the terms you can actually look up as you read – DROWNING METHOD, for example, shows up in the text on page 10, but it isn’t defined until page 94.

That was a good summer.

Okay, here it is after the jump (and I understand if you make fun of me):

I find this very wonderful. I love to see people deeply involved in some book that they really care about. It is the opposite of cynicism.

i had that same problem, adam. i remember, as i was making this, that he didnt define everything. basically, what i did was any word that was in the ‘terms’ section at the end of each part, i noted down the page number of its definition. but i also saw a lot of words that marcus had written in all caps throughout the text but had not defined. they are mystery words: their being in all caps suggests they are defined, but then they dont appear in any of the ‘terms’ sections.

Ban Marcus makes me yawn. I wish he would stick a piece of “tree bread” in his “sleep hole” and then open his “listening frame” to these words: Dear Ben, we are sick of you. Go away.

thank you for making this list. marcus’ indexing of modern life is ‘profound’ i feel. the one problem is language vs. experience/plot. i never remember what happens in the books, only that i was enthralled while reading them. it’s like the story is ‘about’ the reading of the stories, if what makes sense. i went to a reading of his once and there were hot chicks all over the place, and i thought, ‘l like literature.’

i find i remember phrases and bits of language from age of wire and string

i like that, holding that word or phrase in my head, removed from everything.

I was just reading this book again the other day while walking around my neighborhood, and it made me remember that you had sent me your spreadsheet with all this work, and that I should print it and use it. And now I have.

      I looooove this book.
There is a special kind of top secret Joe Wenderoth book that has been in the works forever and it’s kind of like AOW&S. I got to see the manuscript a long time ago. I think it’s due out next year.
