Check out The Guardian’s weak-ass list of “Top 10 Troubled Males in Fiction.” No Hogg, no Nicholas Urfe, no Patrick Bateman, no Frank Cauldhame, no Max de Winter? Who else is missing?
And no George Harvey Bone (protagonist of Patrick Hamilton’s Hangover Square), one of the sorriest fictional characters I’ve ever come across.
What about the dude who turns into a cockroach.
what about every dude in his stories haha

Not to get all Russian here, but seriously? No Raskolnikov?

It would be more interesting to try to name a book WITHOUT any troubled males.
That Guardian list is weak but mainly because their sole criterion includes nearly every novel, period.
gusev. gregor, the officer, et al. dorian gray. “You” over Patrick Bateman? wack!
Moldenke!!!!
YES!
What about Martin Amis?

Weak is right. Moriarty and Peter Pan were troubled? As Tadd said, Raskolnikov was troubled. Cassady, who was Moriarty, wasn’t troubled. He was a friend of my parents. Nuts yes. Troubled no. This Parsons fellow sounds like just another prick trying to sell a book.

Stephen Dedalus?

True. I was just thinking–what book doesn’t have a troubled protagonist? Troubled males, hell. Who wants a novel without trouble, period?
Henry Miller! Who I continue to believe is/was a fictional character.

Darl Budren
Quentin Compson
Holden Caulfield
Seymour Glass
Stephen Dedalus
Humbert Humbert
Hazel Motes

Yeah, jeez, Humbert Humbert, duh. Nice list.

Humbert for sure. Good call.
I feel like some of your nominations might have been left off because they’re just too easy. I liked that the list seemed to explore a bit more instead of dive right into the first that come to mind. To me, it shows he gave it some real consideration instead of just some Family Feud “survey-says?!” shit.
