Birthday buddies

hot_to_trotI was just checking the first part of a forthcoming graphic biography of Trotsky titled, I guess, Trotsky. It’s by Rick Geary and comes out, of course, in October. I was just reading about the anniversary of Tiananmen in the news, and am also making my way through this sprawling and accessible history by Archie Brown called The Rise and Fall of Communism—so a Trotsky comic book seems to fit right in with my reading arc at the moment. I’m hoping for something along the lines of Chester Brown’s awwweeesssommme Louis Riel, but I doubt anything can touch that, at least in terms of graphic bios. Before terrorism there was communism. Think about it.

I love thinking about communism. I spent some time in East Berlin in the eighties. I wrote a novel about it, well sort of about that summer.

My favorite communist ( in regard to HOW FUCKED UP CAN IT GET) though would have to be Pol Pot. He studied at the Sorbonne in the late 60s, being loosely part of the royal family in Cambodia.

But I was recently reading Walter Benjamin and he was – more or less- a marxist, because –that time, that country- it was either that or fascism, so yeah. Not a bad choice in that regard.

Have you seen the movie “Goodby Lenin?” I Love love love that movie. The sick mother in that movie IS my aunt (it’s based in East Berlin when the wall comes down…)A true believer. So moving-
