HORRIBLE POEMS FROM HORRIBLE EMAILS

SOUPBJBB

From an email:

We’ve started a blog called Horrible Poems from Horrible Emails.

Basically, we take emails that are boring, asinine, tedious, or just plain horrible and turn them into equally horrible poems.

If you or your friends have some emails that fit the bill, please submit them to HorriblePoemsHorribleEmails@gmail.com and we’ll see what, if anything, we can do.

Hopefully we can do at least one a day.

Emails don’t have to be particularly raunchy or obscene. They just have to have the potential to be an awesome (by awesome I mean bad) poem.

Ha. I think it’s funny that the “bad poetry” people make you feel bad or something. I’m going to write an essay exploring this.

ESSAY ON GOOD POETRY, BAD POETRY, AND POETRY
      (-for dan)

The world is a room. There are three groups of people: Group A, Group B, and Group C. The people are in the room.

Group A says “Let’s write good poetry. Let’s write poetry that people read and think, ‘This is good poetry.’ Good poetry is harder to write than bad poetry, so it is more valuable. Valuable things are good because value is good. Good is better than bad, so good poetry is better than bad poetry, because good poetry is good and bad poetry is bad.”

Group B says “Let’s write bad poetry. Let’s write poetry that people read and think, ‘This is bad poetry.” Good poetry is good and bad poetry is bad, but why is good better than bad? We like bad poetry. Good poetry is boring. Maybe good poetry isn’t good at all. Maybe bad poetry is good. Maybe bad is good.”

Group C says “Let’s just write poetry. Let’s write poetry that people read and think, ‘This is poetry.’ We’re tired of bad poetry. We’re tired of good poetry, too. Bad poetry is bad, but good poetry is also bad. Good isn’t better than bad. Good is also bad. Bad is bad. Everything is bad. We’re tired of bad. We’re tired of everything. Let’s write poetry that isn’t good or bad. Let’s just write poetry.”

Groups A, B, and C do those things, but then they get bored and stop Then they get bored again and start doing those things again.

      [END OF ESSAY]

this is a good essay/point. i think my annoyance with these bad poetry ventures is that they seem to not be about writing poetry as much as using the idea of poetry as a “high art” or something “elevated” or “classy” as a way to tell a joke. which is strange to me because poetry can have jokes and can be funny without trying to get the humor from intentional “badness.”

i think maybe a lot of this stems from so many people not “understanding” or learning how to read/appreciate poetry.

i’m not saying i don’t enjoy the occasional bad poem. i just think it’s strange to spend so much time on poetry that intends to be “bad” rather than poetry from the people of group C, who simply intend to write poetry.
