I don’t know whether to be happy that Fortune was bright-minded enough to commission Chris Ware’s cover, or sad that they were too conservative to run it. Whole novels (not to mention plenty of nonfiction books about our financial situation) couldn’t come as close as he did to getting it right.

Also really interesting is the bind in which they put themselves. This cover may well wind up more widely distributed and less ephemeral than if they’d just bit the bullet and used it.

Eh, you assume the editors were deeply offended instead of worried about advertisers/subscribers/their reputation in the financial world (or that they simply didn’t think it worked)

i think he’s very clever, very talented, and i respect him, but chris ware doesn’t really “do it for me.” “intentional bland style” is still “bland style” to me. no snark, just being honest.

  18. stephen

comment seems highly unnecessary. sorry chris ware, world.

Right now I am reading THE COMICS OF CHRIS WARE: DRAWING AS A WAY OF THINKING, Edited by David M. Ball and Martha B. Kuhlman, from the University Press of Mississippi. I recommend it for anyone who is a fan of Ware’s work.

I like what Stephen said originally. I don’t understand why people are always backtracking so fast. It’s OK to have an opinion, no?

This cover is ugly i.e. it won’t sell magazines. Plus, how can you back a everythingthat’swrongwithamerica picture that shits on New England?

I don’t get it, aren’t you obsessed with Zachary German and the other G-Chat Realists? Isn’t intentionally bland their whole goal?

  34. ?

Considering New England is beyond awful….

peace and love, vauban. i guess i just prefer art that subverts the anesthesia or the injustice of the world via beauty, love, or trembling darkness, as opposed to an anesthetized, ironic or “clever” aesthetic or “filth & despair” aesthetic, 2 common approaches (unless it’s like a very striking filth & despair aesthetic, like a francis bacon (perhaps he belongs in my extremely vague “trembling darkness” group)). once again, i don’t know shit about shit. just opinions or something.

i like that art that has streaked red paint on its human face. or that is floating through brilliant purple stars in an alternate dimension. or that is humming silently in a forest. hehe….

ha! hmmm… i wouldn’t read it that way, but it’s a free country. not sure if “goal” is the right word, either.

  49. ?

Well clearly a level of blandness in the sentence and story level are a high concern for them.

I don’t really see how Ware is bland at all so maybe you define the word in some different way.

THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT, “?”. CHRIS WARE IS MORE LIVELY THAN THOSE FELLOWS AND MORE COLOURFUL. ZZZZZIPP GETS EXCITED READING CHRIS WARE EVEN THOUGH HE IS TREMENDOUSLY DEPRESSING AND SPENDS A LOT OF TIME “BEATING THE MESSAGE INTO YOU”.

  56. stephen

      yea, i dunno dude.

THAT COVER WOULD SELL MAGAZINES. THINK ABOUT HOW DIFFERENT IT IS. “FORTUNE” GETS PRIME REAL ESTATE AND A MAGAZINE LIKE THAT WITH A COVER LIKE THAT WILL ATTRACT ATTENTION FROM CUSTOMERS USED TO IGNORING IT.

“AM I GOING TO BUY ‘SMART MONEY’ WHICH IS THE SAME AS ALWAYS OR AM I GOING TO BUY ‘FORTUNE’ WHICH IS THEIR SPECIAL ‘500’ ISSUE AND HAS A DIFFERENT KIND OF COVER???? A NEW COVER MEANS INTERESTING THINGS ARE HAPPENING INSIDE!! I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO CHOOSE ‘FORTUNE’!!!!”

it’s really great to know that art can still be confronting enough to something like fortune 500 that, despite their decision to commission an artist as edgy and appealing as ware, the result was too verboten for them to go with

yeah, it would be nice to be able to delete things, sometimes. perhaps enable it for comments without any replies?

then again, this no-delete system might make people more inclined to post things they really mean, or really feel comfortable with appearing to mean.

This is incredible. I agree with the people saying it’s ugly, though. My initial reaction was ‘oh, hey, that’s a really unappealing cover’. When I got into it and paid attention to everything going on in it, I realised that it was amazing, but I only went to the trouble of doing that because David OReilly had linked to it on his Twitter in a flurry of hyperbole.

Americans hate censorship like Pat Robertson hates birth control. The image’s rejection will hopefully get it even more attention than if it had been used as the cover.
