I Like Howard Finster A Lot.

Howard Finster on why he did what he did:

JC: How did this start?

HF: Well, you know. Like, if you had a place itching up here on your head, Johnny? And the first time you put your hand up here you put your hand where it is—don’t matter where it is, you put your hand on it, you know? And if you was to ask me to scratch it, I wouldn’t know where to look. See, I just had a feeling to build this garden, like you know when you have a feeling right where to scratch.

The other half of the interview after the jump.

I love how Howard takes over The Tonight Show. He’s enormous. The tiny stage of American entertainment television can’t contain even a little bit of him. I’m betting TVs all over the country blew up during this interview. Popped like balloons.

I have a Howard Finster t-shirt (sadly now threadbare) with this design on it: http://128.122.253.144/T-Shirts/srhinton/people-f.jpg.

I was wearing this shirt in 2001 or so while ordering a coffee at a Brooklyn cafe where the afro’d barista dude — later to play in TV on the Radio — admired it.

In retrospect, this was the high-point of my fashion life.

My papa has one of his prints that an art-collecting friend gave to him. It’s a picture of young Elvis and it’s my favorite thing at my pop’s house.
