Uh…Power Quote?: Richard Buckner

buckner6001

“I have a degree in creative writing — but trying to get a job with that, well, you might as well be a felon.”

-Richard Buckner, in an interview with the Chicago Tribune

Hey, it’s dark humor time! I’m posting this partly because it’s funny, and partly because Richard Buckner is fucking awesome and you should go buy, or download or whatever it is you kids do these days,  Devotion + Doubt, an album which I have taken the liberty of subtitling “How Michael Schaub Survived College Station, Texas, 1997-1998.” I mean really.

1999-2002. Lots of weed made that possible.

I was actually there from 1995 to 1999, this was just the album that got me through junior year.

And, yeah, lots of weed. And the bars on Northgate that didn’t card minors. Thanks, Crooked Path and Duddley’s Draw!

Richard Buckner is awesome. Just discovered him last year and found a particular affinity for the mysterious and propulsive album, Impasse. It (and Rocky Votolato’s Makers) were my life savers during a hard time.

I’m just blown away that I’m not the only person that has ever lived in College Station on this site.

Oh, man, that’s a beautiful record. Since and The Hill are both winners, too. Hope he makes it to Portland sometime.

College Station is hell. Stayed briefly, for a few days.

I did see him in Portland just a few months ago. It was great. And Dolorean (an awesome Portland band) killed as the opener too.

Buckner is great. Saw him at Univ of Texas in 02 or so and in Cincy back in the late 90’s.

My law school friend loved the song “Rain Squall” and was bummed RB didn’t play it at the Cincy show. After the encore, when people started filing out, my friend yelled out “Rain Squall” and RB grinned and started playing. Those leaving came back in. Sounds cheesy now but fuck it was grand.

Oh, man, David, I might’ve been at that show — was it at the Cactus? If I remember right, and I probably don’t, I went with some friends of mine who actually were going to UT Law at the time.

I need some tips on good Portland bands. Haven’t seen any local bands since I moved here six weeks ago.

Michael, that is crazy … yeah I believe it was at the Cactus.

Well, nice to meet again. You weren’t the guy who told me to stop dancing like a tractor were you?

Most jokes about Texas are off the mark, College Station is the exception that well…you all seem to know already.
