Happy Birthday
from the editor, Darby Larson:
ABJECTIVE turned one year old over the weekend officially with Stump by David Peak. I as a human being want to personally thank everyone who submitted over the last year. As an editor it was humbling to be able to have so much to choose from. Maybe peruse the archives. They are already in love with you and ready to be loved. Love.

What was it like, starting Abjective? How did it work?
What was it like, starting Abjective? How did it work?
abjective started because i was complaining about something on my blog about journals in general, i don’t remember what anymore, it was probably something petty, but i made a threat like, i’m this close to starting my own thing. starting my own thing was in my head for years actually, but i’m not a doer of things so i never did it. then blake left a comment egging me on, like, do it, or something, so I said, fuck then I’m doing it. i bought the domain and played with design schemes, then threw away all design schemes, then decided on other things, opened up submissions, and started doing it.

Good work, and good explanation. That seems like a good idea to start something.
Happy bday.

i disagree with darby about a lot of things, but i honestly think his journal is perhaps the most well-done in terms of aesthetic, particularly in how the design matches the aesthetic selection of the content, in a way that is strange, powerful, and simple, yet uninhibited, or something like that.
anyway, congrats darby. and keep it up.
is there going to be a sincerity week?

I agree on all counts. I love the clean design so much and while I don’t always understand the writing, it definitely makes me think and I’m always surprised. It’s a fine fine magazine.

Happy b-day, Abjective. Seriously great work over there. davidpeak linked to Makings of an Amateur Meteor Shower, and that was my introduction to who you were there, and I mean. Shit. That’s a breaking hand handshake of a first impression. Like Roxane, I might not always “get” the pieces, but it challenges and breathes. Looking forward to year 2.
