it’s like a storm drain: there’s a little piss and water trickling through a hobo fire; a few kids are skating – really flying; some tagging going on; some deals being made; a crazy old man is ranting; and way off in the darkness, there’s a circle jerk.

Actually, for me as alien from ol’ Europe it was great door to the literary life in US (and also outside). I was looking for htmlgiant for years, I just didn’t know it existed and it were called “htmlgiant”. Now I’m here and obsessed.

Well, perhaps, as previous speakers said, a little bit too much cursing.

The rest is obligatory now. Say, if you will be closed, [which I hope won’t be happen, never], I’ll get withdrawal syndrome.

I once dreamed a normal, uneventful day. I swept. I went to work. I came home. I fed my cat. I went to bed. Then, I woke up. I was pissed off, thinking “I’ve already done this day.” That level of disspointment is what I feel every time I visit htmlgiant.

      Change nothing.

the fact that you asked tells me: a.) you are dissatisfied with how things are going (to some extent) b.) you care about public opinion (to some extent).

i think the best htmlgiant stuff has come when b. was not a concern.

i think the worst htmlgiant stuff has come when b. was a determining factor in the writing.

with pr gone and jimmy chen writing once every 5 weeks or something this place has become a little serious.

Since I don’t know any writers in my real life, it’s been pretty helpful to me–particularly in pointing me to new places to check out emerging writers and poets. I had no clue the kind of community that existed before I started coming here.

      Thanks for asking Sam.

Html Giant is at its best when, like Blake Butler’s recent flurry of engaging posts, the focus is on new, ongoing, and controversial issues of writing craft and literature. I also like the posts pointing toward recent independent magazine and book releases. Notices of calls for submissions always strikes me as a strong effort for community. A lot of the interviews here have been great, too.

Most of the attempts here at humor are at best juvenile and fall flat, except for Jimmy Chen’s posts, of course, which are smart and often hilarious. Higgs is new, but I’d like to see more posts that mirror his rigor, curiosity, and wide-ranging focus. I’d like for all of the self-promotion, outside of the ads on the margins, to be dropped. Shit-talk, macho posturing, self-aggrandizement (and its twin, self-deprecation), bullying, pettiness, etc. should be dropped (you’ve got your blog for that). I also don’t care for most of any kind of spotlight on “major” publications like The NY Times, The New Yorker, Harpers, etc. Seeing some more exploration on the works of whatever marginalized peoples would open this forum up incredibly.

I think it would be great if you put up some kind of ongoing survey. Thanks again for asking. Keep up the good work!

      I miss PR.

Ummmm….Many of the “humor” posts are really douchey and childish. Sorry, they are.

Lately there have been a flurry of great posts focusing on language and and that sort of thing. I like the question posts, like “What do you listen to…blah, blah, blah….” Yeah those don’t suck. The posts about scammers are great, like the ones about the douche with the publishing scam. That stuff almost rises to the level of journalism.

      I miss PR.

I love the douchey childish stuff– Chabon’s hair, hot or not bookshelves, writers’ ipods… Some of us have bookish friends and douchy-childish friends, sorely lacking in meeting twain. You guys are the douchy-childish-hyperliterate friends I never had. Except I totes had Justin Taylor.
