OMHFS. One of the best shows I ever saw was her solo at a small club in Chicago (Fitzgerald’s, I think) in 1997 or 98. She had a backing band of young dudes that couldn’t keep up with her — but the most impressive thing was her sweet sweet spirit, one that makes this alliance almost impossible to believe.

Is that absolutely positively the same Maureen Tucker?

  3. Matthew Simmons

There’s some video and it sure sounds like her.

Well, some percentage of artful noisemakers is going to be seduced by the phonily “fiscal” ‘conservatism’, the “liberty” raps, and so on that have infested the reality-processing of lots of otherwise sensible Earthlings.

It’d be interesting to hear/read Tucker talking about her current thinking – how it evolved, what she thinks of the thorough, long-standing socialization of infrastructure in America (on which American prosperity has always rested), and so on – , perhaps in conversation with, say, Patti Smith.

Tucker says (as she does in the link above), “I’m furious about the way we’re being led towards socialism. I’m furious about the incredible waste of money when things that we really need and are important get dropped because there’s no money left.”

Smith might reply, “So you just want the money collected from the community to be collected in a fair way and spent wisely. – Maureen, that is ‘socialism’!”

Yet another reason to separate art from artist. I was watching “Chinatown” earlier and had to remind myself this.

I believe the Sun City Girls were her backing band at one point. But I don’t think those guys were ever young dudes.

I don’t know them, but I don’t think the group I saw was her normal backing band. They had chord charts and stuff on music stands.
