@ The New York Observer, Matthew Hunte weighs in on the newly printed 20 Under 40: Stories from the New Yorker anthology: “Instead of highlighting new talent, they inadvertently end up championing precocity and nurturing a culture where early recognition and promise are conflated with achievement.”

The reference, by way of title, to Bowie’s song of the same name–“Oh You Pretty Things,” makes me think that this whole write-up is a castoff of something never quite clarified. Mostly, it reads like a gesture. Perhaps that’s all it has to be, yet I also believe that if one moves from praise to the beginning of a theory that “late-bloomers” have been neglected, that they should also present a way in which we can either talk more about or attempt to better include said lot. A weigh-in, yes, but lightweight.
