so did you really get an advanced copy? I have liked the stories I have read by him. For the first time in my life the other night, I clicked a facebook ad because it said there was an excerpt from the novel. But I think they lied. I never found the excerpt, anyway. Which makes me even less likely to buy the book. But I am interested in reading it. Wish he didn’t use performance enhancing drugs while writing tho.

I told my aunt to buy it because I really did like it a lot. She bought it on Amazon and said it was a terrific novel. But it turned out (Aunt Pauline is 87) she bought the wrong book: http://www.amazon.com/Tai-Pan-James-Clavell/dp/0440184622

However, I think the reviews could just as well apply to Tao’s novel.

“Clavell is, as always, a matchless tale-spinner.”—Cosmopolitan

“Every five or six years there appears on the horizon a book so vast in scope, so peopled with bold, colorful characters, it eclipses other efforts…. Such a book is Tai-Pan.”—Pittsburgh Press

“Grand entertainment…packed with action…gaudy and flamboyant with blood and sin, treachery and conspiracy, sex and murder…fresh and vigorous.” —New York Times
