Did you see the one w/Garry Shandling? Not the mutual love fest that the in the series are… Shandling alternately ignores and belittles Gervais — sure, he’s doing a bit, but it doesn’t keep it from getting real uncomfortable, and unless I’m totally misreading it, Gervais is genuinely surprised and hurt.

Haven’t caught that confrontation yet. However, from the work I’ve seen coming from both of them, Shandling has always struck me as the comedian with the far greater sense of compassion. So if Shandling ended up dissing him, my guess is that it was as a response to the callousness of the comedy Gervais produces. Compassionate people can get pretty furious.

yeah, that’s part of what shandling hits him for. brings up the jokes on extras that center around the disabled and nazis and so on and asks him why they’re funny. gervais says of course they’re not making fun of the disabled, the point is to explore the awkwardness of certain social situations when taboo subjects come up. shandling says it’s not exactly a new point. anyhow, fascinating tv. gervais keeps stepping on shandling’s jokes, shandling keeps freezing out gervais, odd stuff. you can find a few clips on youtube.

Thing is, I can see how that explanation maybe works for stuff like extras, but it makes doesn’t really make sense when regarding routines like this one, where the entire point really does seem to come down to “god homosexuality is so weird, isn’t it all just rape anyway, i mean i’d never suck a dick, how bizarre to enjoy such obviously demeaning behavior, etc. etc.”
And now I’m off to actually watch the clips you’ve been talking about.

wow, that gervais routine was lame. and porpoises fucking each other in the blowhole should be a goldmine!
gervais was genius in the office, and i’ve seen that show three or four times through, but the shandling interview did make me think about the limits of his general stance.
