Finally, all Borges fiction collected. Like your kidneys, a local library, or a reliable bowl–this you need. [Edit–it has been out 10 years] [Edit–beer] [Edit, still read it, though.]

Watchu mean ‘finally’? Honey, this has been in print for a decade.

The cool thing would be to edit my post by adding the word NOT in front of “collected.”

      Would that work?

      Never forget time is relative.

Borges collaborated on translations into English with one translator only – Norman Thomas di Giovanni. Borges’ agent has ensured that these translations have gone out-of-print and been replaced by the Hurley versions in order to maximise income to the Borges Estate.

Now that’s fair enough on one level – that’s an agent’s job after all – but readers should be able to read the di Giovanni Borges alongside other versions – I’m not taking sides as they all have their merits and demerits.

As much as I love Borges, the Hurley translation is clunky and awkward at best. Try the New Directions editions instead. Besides, I prefer reading Borges piecemeal, little by little. His prose, like all fine things, is to be savored.

Yeh, I agree there, Dan, and maybe why I didn’t know this book was 1999. My bookshelf is his work in different volumes. I didn’t know until today there was a collected fiction. I guess I had it collected, but in shards.

ZZZZIP SAYS IF YOU’RE GOING TO PICK UP THE COLLECTED FICTION, YOU SHOULD PICK UP THE SELECTED NON-FICTIONS AS WELL

ZZZZZZZIPP DIDN’T THINK IT COULD BE SO BUT THE ESSAYS ARE EVEN BETTER THAN THE FICTION IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT (THOUGH HE’S ONLY READ THE HURLEY AND KERRIGAN TRANSLATIONS)(THX FOR THE DI GIOVANNI INFORMATION EVERYONE YOU GUYS BETTER NOT BE FRONTING)

In Argentina (and in the Spanish literary scene?) he’s more thought of as an essayist, and that probably has something to do with the reason that Borges is the “Commentator” in that Commentator/Narrator novel mentioned a while back. ZZZZZIP CAN’T REMEMBER WHERE THAT WAS, BESIDES, HIS BRAIN IS A PHOTON, ONLY SO MUCH CLICKING AT A TIME!!!!
