‘The Rough South of Larry Brown’

Thanks to Aaron Manning for sending over this wonderful clip from a feature length documentary on Larry Brown, including commentary on how he got started writing, and his early submission/rejection process: how can you not love this man?

Damn I want the rest of this.

Nice. I wonder where you can get the rest?

Dirty Work is one of my favorite novels.

In five minutes, he made me want to reconsider the impression I’ve had of him since I first read him: that he was a cut-rate Carver, a Hannah without the grace notes. I don’t know if I’ll be able to completely shed that impression, but this certainly gives me reason to look again.

People: This documentary rules. I went to Mississippi in 2007 and saw it play at the Oxford Book Festival. Holy shee-it. It’s the coolest documentary I’ve ever seen about a writer. I ordered a copy from the director shortly after and have it around here somewhere. I highly recommend it. It made me cry.
I wrote an article about this trip and it ran in a few newspapers, but now I can’t find it anywhere for the life of me. Crap.

amen, it’s a stellar documentary of a singular talent. director gary hawkins recreates 3 of larry’s stories, brings them to life, which takes some adjusting to, but in the end it works. plus, the larry footage is one of a kind. like he was.

for all you harry crew fans, hawkins made a crews on too:
the rough south of harry crews.” haven’t seen that one, though.

i have ‘fond memories’ of ‘92 days,’ i think that is what it is called, the long short story where he keeps getting rejected and i think goes to jail

yeah, that’s a good one. narrator’s on a bender. my favorite short story of his might be “facing the music” for the way larry slowly reveals the story’s true drama through the most subtle and simple situation: a married couple, in their bedroom, in front of the tv. stellar stuff.

      - when he’s writing he’s his most happy. when not, he’s depressed.

      - when he’s writing, just leave him alone, let ‘em right.

…. i think im gonna show this to my family. Let them know I’m not just a basket case…. there are others…
