Two New Covers
Two excellent new covers for two books I am really looking forward to this year:
Patrick Somerville’s The Universe in Miniature in Miniature, from Featherproof Books Fall 2010, design by Zach Dodson
(which was just announced as a Featherproof title I think yesterday, on the heels of his smash The Cradle, and while you’re at it, take a look at the covers for Christian Tebordo’s The Awful Possibilities and Lindsay Hunter’s Daddy’s, (Daddy’s? wow), which are both also damn beautiful and exiting)
Tao Lin’s Richard Yates, from Melville House 9/7/10, photography by Michael Northrup
Tags: patrick somerville, Tao Lin

I loved the Somerville title story in American Short Fiction–can’t wait for the book. Great cover.

Why doesn’t Melville House just bite the bullet and re-plume: Tao Lin House. Tao Lin Nation!

Wow. Tao has a lot of pseudonyms.

I’m mixed on Tao’s cover. I like the image but I’m not sold on the rest of the design. It kind of looks, actually, like a major press book trying to imitate an indie-press one. Classic vaguely-hip-dude-with-something-that’s-not-a-face-where-his-face-should-be. So I don’t know… Zachary German’s cover looks great, btw. Can we get a shot of that up?

Love these covers, especially the first. Only a hunchback could hate them.

One question, out of curiosity: Do you have to seek permission from the estate of an author to use his name for a collection of fiction? Could I write a book called, say, DAVID FOSTER WALLACE and have it published and distributed with contacting anyone? Not that I would or want to. Just curious.

Zach at featherproof completely blew my mind with that cover. I hadn’t seen that Wilson cover, though. I’m betting he hasn’t, either. Oh, good ideas.

…It looks like Lindsay Hunter’s isn’t actually the cover, it will be an object, the collection will somehow literally be presented in the form of a package of cigarettes.

I’d imagine making his name bigger than the title is deliberate, but it kinda looks like a mistake.

I reckon, given the title of this and who it refers to, everything about this works really great. the whole major-press indie-imitation feel to it is really perfectly tao, enjambs both in a really lurid, captivating way and is totally in keeping with his earnest irony and deadpan deflationism.

Hey, I’ve got some old cassettes I’m giving away. Let’s see…there’s some Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Bjork, and some other stuff I can’t remember right now. If anyone wants to give me a mailing address I can send you a whole box of cassettes. Some of them are just stuff I’ve recorded–you know–mix tapes and whatnot. Oh yeah, there’s a tape by a German band called Fury in the Slaughterhouse that’s pretty good. They have since disbanded but one of the members went on to become a doctor. There’s also some B Tribe, whose music is quite beautiful. So if you’re interested, please send me a mailing address to sapporro1@gmail.com
Thanks!

I like the cover for Tao Lin’s book. For some reason, though, I think Mars Volta when I look at it.

I think you’re confusing Melville House for Muumuu House.

According to the copyright and trademarks courses I’ve taken in school, it’s perfectly allowed, especially since you are not making a statement about the person, but simply stating their name. There’d be no case against you. So let’s see that book.
