I love this woman.

UPDATE: Didn’t really do any research on this, and probably should have. Middle finger is photoshopped. The real image is this:

Let’s call the first image, then, an expression of collective desire.

Yeah. The hand does look pretty bad, but yeah. I was just talking about the famous Tiananmen Square picture last night, and this calls that to mind immediately.

      Fell for the photoshopping.

      I agree, though. Still awesome.

I like it better without the finger. The power that this kind of resistance takes is amazing.

it’s amazing, but the changing of the hand changes the way i read the expression on ahmadinejad’s face. like the first picture, he looks really cross: “well fuck you too, bitch.” and the second picture, he looks more hurt: “can’t you please move out of the way of my vehicle?”

I see what you mean. I perceive anger—and in her, defiance—in the first. In the second, I see him as bemused and dismissive.

      indeed, everything depends on context…
Very interesting story – not only the first picture, but also the whole situation…

I would like to do more research to provide a better platform for my response, but here it is: The US wants to invade Iran. We really do. It has been in the planning for decades. Our movements in the Middle East-specific are geared toward a conflict with Iran. I see this gentleman as attempting to prevent what we (not the US, but we as a people) would do if our homes were threatened with invasions. Protect. While I will not defend his politics or his strategic threats against my country (and essentially, my loved ones, here and abroad), I must consider his position as one not of evildoer, but as a man trying to do what is best for his country’s safety, at this point.

And, to avoid the argument of “then why are the people protesting” — we have had citizens protesting against our own leaders since our government was created.

I completely agree. It’s amazing how people can be led to hate a man and a country they know nothing about.

totally dude. what’s best for his country is too needlessly provoke conflicts, steal elections and violently oppress your own citizens, and run around acting like a total nutjob denying the holocaust and other nonsense. Dude is just doing what he has to do!

I can’t really comment on what the situation is like IN Iran, but I do know that he’s doing more than just protecting his country from invasion. I’ve been deployed twice to Iraq and I’m getting ready for my third. My first tour was in Northeastern Iraq not too far from the Iranian border. There were a few border incidents involving the Iranians. My second tour was much more eventful but less direct on Iran’s part. We were tracking multiple weapons shipments into Iraq from Iran to the Mahdi Militia, including EFP’s (Explosively Formed Projectiles) that were manufacture quality, not homemade junk. Mortars, anti aircraft weapons of all sorts and a lot of handheld weapons like assault rifles, sniper rifles and RPG’s. The thing about it was that we weren’t allowed to do anything about it, but intercept the shipments once they were into Iraq, the best we could. Those are definitely not the acts of a leader protecting his country. Iran wants the Government Of Iraq to be weak, so that when the US leaves, they will be able to invade and take what they wanted in the 80’s. The best way they can weaken the Iraqi Government is by supporting the militias and terror cells.

Pretty sure my desire to flip off Ahmadinejad does not equal hating the country of Iran. I want to flip off Bush. I don’t hate the United States.

“I must consider his position as one not of evildoer, but as a man trying to do what is best for his country’s safety, at this point.”

There are no depths to which the anti-imperialist won’t reach! You defend a torturer, anti-semitie, and war-monger… in the name of nationalism (er, “defending his country”)!

Nationalists, torturers, and war-mongers need to be opposed everywhere, not just when they are domestic. Does every state not imprison, bomb, and repress in the name of national security? The horrors of the last several centuries should have taught us to see the corpses piled behind the phrase “doing what is best for his country”.

That is also a possibly. Another one sync’d with that would be they are helping Iraq to make sure the US loses, because if they do not, then it provides the US with a stronger military outpost closer to their country. Much like how, if push came to shove, we’d help Mexico if they were being attacked/invaded by an enemy. Or much like how we gave those very same weapons to Iraq and Iran, which we are now trying to stop. We aided in the destablization of those countries, because that was one of our goals in an attempt to takeover in the near future. But I agree with you — I never wanted to allude to that he was SOLELY trying to protect, as I said I do not agree with his politics or strategic moves, but we’d have to take into account that that is one of his motives. Such motives never get spoken of, and everything boils down to “He’s a bad bad bad guy”, much like how the American media portrayed Castro, although Castro’s militia was asked for by the people to overthrow the American supported government at the time.

I hope you’d reread my post…. You attached yourself to the idea that he may very well be trying to do what’s best for his country, while still being a terrible person. He could be facing a really true threat from the US (even though our products, and to a lesser extent, way of life have filtered into Iranian society). He could be facing a real threat and even though he’s done terrible things, still be trying to do what’s right by making sure an outside force doesn’t invade and take over his country. You act like he should just act normal and allow things to pass. Every country right now (it seems) is up and listening. Every country has had its atrocities by the people with the “power & in charge”. We could build cities out of the corpses every country’s leaders have allowed to pile up or piled up themselves. But I’d like to assume that “protecting his country and its citizens” are also a part of his agenda however misguided, instead of calling him a flatout monsters and all that entails. Seems pretty “easy” for people to do that.

      A) What you’re talking about, the invasion of Iran, is and was desired by the neo-cons like Cheney who are now out of power. Obama’s people and the current DOD have zero interest in invading Iran, and to just say “the US wants to invade Iran” is a ridiculous statement. Who is the US? The people? Different factions? Our government? We’re not a monolith.

and B) This is not just a man we have disagreements with. His own people are terrorized by him. He wants to wipe out Israel. He is a meglomaniac. He supports a regime of terror and of oppression, religious and political. He wants to build up a nuclear arsenal. He’s a major league asshole and he’s hated all over the world. He was never, never someone who fought for freedom or even pretended to fight for freedom. So let’s be clear about that.

I just pray our troops don’t get “nuked” when Ahmadinejad finalizes his nuclear capabilities… and they also go after Israel.  By then, our own oil surplus will be so diminished the U.S. won’t be able to go after them.  It’s all in Obama’s plan.
