Craft Notes & Power Quote

Louise Bourgeois on Writing

“Art is manipulation without intervention.”

“I am not what I am, I am what I do with my hands.”

“Surrealism is anathema for me. Because the surrealists made a joke of everything. And I consider life a tragedy.”

“I like Francis Bacon best, because Francis Bacon has terrific problems, and he knows that he is not going to solve them, but he knows also that he can escape from day to day and stay alive, and he does that because his work gives him a kick.”

“Once I was beset by anxiety but I pushed the fear away by studying the sky, determining when the moon would come out and where the sun would appear in the morning.”

“Art is not about art.”

“It is not so much where my motivation comes from but rather how it manages to survive.”

I’m more in agreement with Mel Brooks: “Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.”

louise bourgeois is probably one of my favorite writers even though she doesn’t identify as a writer. her book destruction of the father, full of all of her fragments/writing, along with essays about her. amazing.

oh, i’m not at all in agreement with “comedy is tragedy plus time.” i just think it’s really funny to say. i don’t know, coming from alan alda’s character in that movie…fuck, you had to be there. for some reason i believe everyone has the exact same recall and has seen the exact same movies and thought the exact same things about them as me. i’m working on that.

alan, that’s from one of the best Woody A movies evah – Crimes and Misdemeanors. I love AA’s character in that movie, and how much Woody A hates him. Great movie for writers to watch, just for their interactions.
