NYC Area Alert: Lutz, Schomburg & Krusoe on Thursday at St. Marks Series
Hey everyone- it’s 1 AM here in Hong Kong. I’ve been at an all-Indian dance party for the last several hours. I’m pretty drunk right now, and I have to wake up in 5 hours, at 6 AM, to be out of the house at 7 AM to be at the airport by 8 to fly at 93. The flight is about 15 1/2 hours, and if all goes well I’ll be at JFK around 1PM on the 16th, which will actually be the same day I left. What’s the point of this post? It’s that even though I’m super-bummed that my EPIC JOURNEY is finally coming to its close, I’m hugely excited to be back in the USovA in time to go to this reading. Full details about it (swiped from reading curator Greg Purcell’s facebook post) after the jump.

The 8th issue of Sleepingfish, coedited by Derek White and guest Gary Lutz, is now open for electronic submissions.
Butler takes Greenpoint: a photo diary
WHAT: Blake Butler, Gary Lutz & Robert Lopez read at WORD Bookstore in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on Thursday, 3/5/09.
Sorry, I didn’t get pictures of the other two. I don’t think Gary likes to have his picture taken, actually, and I didn’t want to spook Robert by shooting with a flash without warning first. As you can see, I didn’t give a damn about spooking Blake. He’s staying on my couch while he’s in town. Camera with flash is the least of his worries.
AFTER THE READING WE WENT TO THE PENCIL FACTORY
It feels good to be home @ 11 pm on Friday night posting about Gary Lutz, it feels right
I am glad I am not out being a jerk off.
I am glad I stayed inside to read this lecture on sentences, originally delivered by Gary Lutz at Columbia, and now reprinted in the new issue of the Believer (which also has an interview with Gordon Lish, & from the preview on the site, it looks really funny and righteous). Lish is also on the cover. Believe that.
This lecture by Gary Lutz is probably the most apt deconstruction of language in sentences and how a certain breed of languaged sentences are made. I would show this lecture to people who asked why their story about the Russian expatriate looking for his father wasn’t quite enough just on story alone even though everyone in the boardroom was crying.
As I read the lecture I kept highlighting pieces when I thought ‘this would be a good part to quote when I blog about this lecture,’ though every time I read a new graph, I kept deciding to highlight that one, because every line in the lecture is right on the $$$. But we already knew that.

What happens when you give Gary Lutz to a 14-year-old
The other day I was somewhere waiting on something with a fourteen-year-old kid that I know and he didn’t have anything to read and I happened to have two books: Happy Birthday or Whatever by Annie Choi and Stories in The Worst Way by Gary Lutz. For some reason I thought this would be a good time to expand said kid’s literary horizons, but I was wrong. It was not. He took one look at the cover and grimaced.
“It’s good,” I said, “and they’re really short, so you can just read one and see if you like it.”
He opened to a random page and started “Waking Hours” by first reading the title outloud and seeming unpleased with it.
After he got a page and a half into it he said, “Oh, Nope. Too weird. Ew.”
“What?”
“Right there, look at that,” he said, pointing at a paragraph and scowling.
He was pointing at the word “seepages” and I thought for a second that this was the one about the guy with cloitis, but that wouldn’t make sense because what 14-year-old wouldn’t want to read about a guy with cloitis? Well, actually, probably not this one because his favorite show is Friends and he’s recently discovered that he likes using a stair master.I don’t know. You figure it out.
But this one wasn’t the one about the guy with cloitis anyway, it was the one about the gay, divorced, depressed guy who thinks people in his apartment are arranging their furniture exactly like his and mirroring all of his actions. It was the word “seepages” that pissed him off. Seepages. If he had gone on to read another paragraph he would have gotten to the gay bar scene, but I think he was skimming anyway.
fc2 Blog
In the world of blog competitors, fuck, we might have one here now: FC2 is blogging live live. Mostly about their authors and new releases and the like, all of which remain good news in my book. Worth a bookmark? Fo sho.
It also seems a brother to the Now What blog, run by similar company, Lance Olsen and crew.
If someone can convince Gary Lutz to start blogging, I will cry a baby doll that will stand on America.
Please?
