Reconsidering Stereotypes

My brother sent me this link to the Denver Broncos Cheerleaders, along with a note saying: “one of the questions is what book are you reading?”

I began clicking through the profiles.

Caves & caves & caves, ultimately.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYVv8To7wj4

Here lies an interview with Gaspar Noé & Marilyn Manson.  (I’m in it for the Noé, but to each his own.) Make sure to get past the first two insanely MTV’d minutes for a calm interview with the filmmaker and a conversation between the two.

‘Glitch is an independent literary/art publication produced by the Print Proliferation Agency. It contains a collection of work in poetry, prose and visual art.’ This looks good.

And finally, explore the caves of Lascaux from your ccchhhhaaaiirrrr!

The other Blake

Behemoth3I was just over at the Morgan Library, checking out this new exhibit, William Blake’s World: “A New Heaven Is Begun. The show contains engravings, illuminations, original diaries and manuscripts, letters and an audio clip of “The Tyger,” read by none other than Jeremy “Die Hard: With a Vengeance” Irons. It is awesome, and it is there until January 3. If you love images of biblical torment and poignant reminders of God’s implacable wrath as much as I do, this show is not to be missed.

Kiki Smith

KikismithI feel cross-influenced. By that I mean that some visual artists and musicians have as much influence on my writing as writers do, often more. For this reason I want to show you some pictures of work by Kiki Smith, a visual artist who makes incredible objects.

I realize that a lot of HTMLgiant readers might feel like the art world is another planet. It often feels that way if you go to an art gallery opening to mooch free wine or the MoMa on a busy afternoon. Maybe you were stoned all the way through your Art History 101 class in high school or college or maybe you never took one or maybe your teacher was unforgivably snobbish. Maybe it seems like 90% of the “contemporary art” you’ve seen shouldn’t be called art at all. That might be true. I don’t know. I just know there are a lot of living artists that I love because I get that giddy-faced-piss-my-pants feeling when I see their work in real life. Kiki Smith is probably at the top of this list of Artists Who Are Like Writers.

I feel like writers and visual artists have a lot more in common than we often acknowledge. Writing and making objects are lonely endeavors. We’re both trying to get something that is so clear in our brains to be just as clear to other people. READ MORE >

Who Deserves What?

New York Times best-selling Anteater?

New York Times best-selling Anteater?

When you think about it, the title of this post really asks two questions. The answers, as near as I can tell, are, respectively, nobody and nothing. But Felicia Sullivan (author of The Sky Isn’t Visible From Here and former everything-in-chief of the venerable & lamented Small Spiral Notebook) isn’t so sure. Over at her blog, she takes on what she calls “the culture of entitlement” within the literary world today. Then, in the comments section,  Rachel Fershleiser (of Housing WorksSmith magazine & co-editor of the Six Word Memoir books) raises some questions about the assumptions underlying the arguments of the post. Things get pretty heated pretty quick, between the two of them and a third commenter named Les, who seems more interested in critiquing Rachel’s grammar than listening to what she says. (Felicia, on the other hand, dives in head-first). It’s an interesting back and forth between two smart people (and Les), who actually seem to be talking TO each other at least as often as they’re talking PAST each other, which in internet-thread terms is basically a miracle of loaves and fishes. I am still sorting out my exact thoughts about this debate/discussion, but forget about what I think for a second. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Coldfront mag gets exclusive snapshot of Farrah Field

eric_dane_rebecca_gayheart_threesome_sex_tape2

Hah! John Deming wishes. No, but seriously. Ken L. Walker has a mini-interview at Coldfront with the author of Rising, in which celebrity sex tapes for some reason don’t figure at all. Subjects which are discussed include: growing up in the Air Force, listening to Fleet Foxes, and writing after personal tragedy.

We moved to Louisiana from Sicily when I was in seventh grade and my dad retired there. I remember not having any friends at all until I perfected my “y’all”. So, I’m southern in an untypical way; my family refers to me as “The Yankee” and they think it’s funny that I wear a scarf.
