Gordon Lish Interview @ BOMB + Harry Crews

1. Fantastic new interview with Gordon Lish at BOMBBLOG, on the occasion of his revision of his work for the Collected publication.

GL: The less I have in mind, the more my mind can be counted upon. Unhappily, for me, mind is scarcely the whole of what applies. Call it the art of the bricoleur—making do with less. Making much out of little, a mountain out of a molehill.

2. Edited manuscript, plus photo and brief audio excerpt of Harry Crews teaching in Florida in 1980, at This Long Century.

      CORRECTION:

You know what I would like? I would like to see for someone to come and tell me that I did not have a perfect right to be so nervous and scared. Because any idiot should realize I had a perfect right to be. Even a moron should be able to realize I had a perfect right to be. Listen, no one is asking you to be a genius, you know. No one is sitting here making the statement to you that you are expected to be a genius, you know. Have I been sitting asking yof you anything other than that you just sit and listen? Is fair fair, or is fair fair?

Talked to Harry Crews on the phone earlier this year. One of the goddamn highlights of my life, for sure. The man is a jewel that has been fashioned from hog bones, CASE knives, snake skin, and then spit-shined with blood and beer.
