Mark Leidner is funny

from his Trembyle blog:

chapbookcitypart2-1

chapbookcitypart2-3

chapbookcitypart2-2

His chapbook Night of 1,000 Murders is really smart and good, too.

He also wrote this really good story ‘Snow‘. And these poems. And stuff.

I like Mark.

Mark is a great sum of money. You will thank his poems when they dismantle the brakes in your car. Even when I was a silly baby he was happy to offer strong constructive critiques of my silly baby work. It’s an honor I think to be his friend on the internet.

Yeah, Mark is funny, and I think he does something different with funny (in poetry). His lines have a conman’s charisma, but by the end of the poem you’re convinced that what he’s showing you isn’t a scam, and is wonderful. Mark also has a chapbook online called The Empire, which is his foray into the political treatise/utopia. Here: http://issuu.com/andrewlundwall/docs/markleidner-theempire

For anyone interested in looking further at humor in poetry, there is a great round table discussion from a few years ago at Jacket: http://jacketmagazine.com/33/humpo-discussion.shtml – it’s really long, but I just scanned through and found a lot of great points.

I posted about it on my site, but I figure it will get more exposure in a comments stream on HTMLGIANT. So check it out if you laugh and read books, or vice versa.

The best thing about Mark is that he got ELECTED Poet Laureate of California without even living there. First person ever to do that, I think.
