If you find yourself in or around Buffalo, NY this Friday, check out the day-long symposium dedicated to Mayer’s work…featuring CA Conrad, Dorothea Lasky, and many other superstars, including my wife, Caitlin Newcomer:

I’d come if I could – even just for the adorable poster.

oh man, i freaking love mayer. when i was in the states this last xmas i went to every damned used bookstore i could to find her early work. then i happened to meet her daughter when i was in nyc. i almost peed my pants.

      anyway

Chris, what’s your wife going to talk about? is she a Mayer scholar? is it going to be hosted online at some point? is the Mayer going to be there herself?

      AAHHHHH

      Hey, Shane,

My wife, Caitlin, does a lot of work in the field of contemporary poetry written by women. In a nutshell, her presentation will be about how Mayer negotiates the role of “poet” and the role of “mother” in her book Midwinter Day.

I wish I could be there; but alas, I am stuck in Florida.

Oh, Yes, Mayer is going to be there in person — she’ll be doing a reading in the evening.

How cool you met her daughter! Although I could imagine how that encounter might be strange, given that Mayer often mentions her kids in her poetry — to meet one in real life would be like meeting a character from a book.
