Oh Satan, you rascal

As of late, I’ve been on this Black Metal kick. Mayhem, Burzum, Krallice, Sigh, Cobalt, Liturgy, Wolves in the Throne Room, etc. So a buddy lent me this book called Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind. It’s not very well written, by which I mean the composition isn’t particularly engaging, the organization is less than fluid, the structure is uninspired, and the insights are rarely explored beyond their basic recognition; but, as a primer for the genre, I thought it was pretty good. (Plus, there’s a bunch of crazy pictures depicting Norwegians in corpsepaint.) Before I read it I didn’t know anything about Black Metal, and now I feel like I have a fair understanding of its origin. Plus, I learned a little about Vikings, a little about murder, and a little about Satanism, which are all interesting things to learn a little about.

Here’s the opening paragraph:

The Devil has always treasured music. What better arena to inspire, cultivate, and propagate his will into the affairs of man? Music serves as both balm and excitant, soothing the savage or awakening dormant passions. In spiritual terms music is a magical operation, a vehicle for man to communicate with the gods. Depending on whom the celebrants invoke, this can mean soaring to heaven on the voices of angels or raising beasts from the pits of hell.

Interesting how speaking about the devil and satan centered literature is much more accepted in literary circles and, ahem, somehow more interesting than discussions and literature about God capital G.

Got it, thanks David! I’m new to Black Metal and am horrible at spelling in general…when I go to the board my students always snicker because they know I’m bound to misspell at least half of what I write. :)

Off to find “Lurker of Challice” — thanks!

I have a couple friends who grew up in a small town (~5000) in north-central Kansas. They said that people there only believe in Satan. They said that people there didn’t believe in God, really, only Satan. One’s from a fairly fundamentalist Christian family and the other’s from a moderately fundamentalist Christian family.

You make a good point, mjm. In general it seems that the dark side holds stronger court in the land of the literati — but that said, it seems like Adam did a post a while back that dealt with his belief in God which generated a lot of positive feedback. I remember a bunch of people encouraging him to write more about his faith.

i was really impressed with that Believer article when i first read it. i didn’t expect to be, but i was.

i’m pretty huge on the french scene these days: deathspell omega, blut aus nord. there’s a heavy emphasis on twisted sonics, new textures. it feels like they’re building upon what the US stuff did with the 2nd wave scandinavian stuff. very, very exciting.

And if you give me a bottle of wine and a night with no plans and no writing to do, this happens.

I just went and found a link to all the Blut Aus Nord albums:

      http://lordmessiah.wordpress.com/2008/07/24/blut-aus-nordfrance/

plus this great quote from the band:

“Blut Aus Nord is an artistic concept. We don’t need to belong to a specific category of people to exist. If black metal is just this subversive feeling and not a basic musical style, then Blut Aus Nord is a black metal act. But if we have to be compared to all these childish satanic clowns, please let us work outwards [from] this pathetic circus. This form of art deserves something else than these mediocre bands and their old music composed 10 years before by someone else.”

They’re not Satanists. They don’t worship Satan. The general idea is that there’s a struggle between good and evil, God and the Devil, right? I think my friends were saying that the fundamentalist Christians there (and probably other places) don’t have much to say about ‘how good God is’ but have a lot to say about ‘how evil Satan is.’ There is a lot more time spent being ‘afraid of hell’ than being ‘hopeful of heaven.’ It’s not a joke or anything. It’s just regular Christian conservatism and fear-mongering. Their parents think that Satan is as real as anything (realer than God, maybe) and is out there tempting people. Their parents think they are going to hell, that they will literally be thrown into a pit of fire for eternity or some shit. It’s fucked up.
