Blake Butler—
Repeating the same thing over and over in social networks and blanket emailing my inbox is never going to make me want to buy a book. In fact, it might make me want to not buy a book. Try something else. Or better yet: just exist.
what is blanket emailing

mass emails, that go out like a blanket covering shit

I avoid books that show up in my inbox (FB/email/Twitter/etc.) more than four or five times. Sorry.

How can I exist?

focus on not existing. You will fail. Then you will exist.

I’m dying to know what inspired you to write this. I feel that way every time you write one of these little cryptic little snippet posts. Obviously you’re mad AT somebody or something. Out with it, man! Undirected anger turns back on its issuer–just like black magic.

it’s directed at so many people and places, i couldn’t begin to list. the inbox and facebook and twitter feeds are full of people repeating themselves. we all know who they are. if you wonder who they are, log in to facebook.

sometimes i wish those requests to “become a fan of…” had a reply button where i could say, “fuck your book” after the fifth time they sent it. without a reply button, i’d seem kind of mean going to their profile and sending them a message about it out of nowhere.

Somebody tell Jonathan Ames that repeating the same thing over and over in social networks is never going to make me want to watch a TV show.

try self promotion on the sly. run a blog that doesn’t talk about your writing but still blazes your name in front of a hundred people every day. or run a press that gets other people to make movies out of other people’s books. or tell someone else’s life story on a postcard which is really your own story over and over again.
[mean feel bad]
