Mean
This post is mean spirited but only by semantic
I think I realized yesterday that all people really need in a forum is a placeholder under the illusion of an idea so that they have somewhere to argue and get their big O open.
Hmmm.
So, like, does Bret Easton Ellis suck ass or what?

That depends- American Psycho-era Ellis or James-van-der-Beek-is-playing-the-guy-based-on-me-in-that-movie-they-made-about-that-book-I-don’t-remember-writing-era Ellis?
Because either way the answer is FUCK YOU.

‘less than zero’ is one of the lamest books i’ve ever been tricked into reading. ‘perks of being a wallflower’ for the 80’s anyone?

American Psycho and The Informers are two books I have read probably twenty and five times each respectively. Glamorama seems like fascinating failure. Rules and Zero are okay but amateurish. Lunar Park made me sad for Ellis. Ellis is an idiot savant.

i understand the idiot part, but not the savant? i guess there is something to the cataloguing methods of AP, but the rest of all that crap is so old and boring and obvious, i don’t know, i don’t know how he could ever be ‘respected,’ beyond the idea that anyone should be ‘respected’

i was just getting in the mean spirit. I think AmPsycho is a good book, and an important one even. I’ve never read another word he’s written or thought about doing so. Just not interested.

i thought some of eggers stories in how we are hungry were pretty good. i keep hearing you shall know our velocity is good. maybe i’ll pick it up.

I liked velocity also. I always thought that book didn’t get enough credit, crushed under the weight of the glorious AHWOSG (I read also, my story sounds like Blake’s, at a time when I hadn’t read much else so I thought it was good, different than other things I’d read, but I don’t know how I would read it now). Probably, for velocity, because the hard and tradebacks are different, and the first impression was based on the hard, but the trade is the more interesting one, so critics were kind of fucked with. But then velocity never got read much as a result, so.
What is the What is a great book, but its not comparable to his other works because it’s not even really fiction. It’s like journalism disguised as fiction. Eggers was provided all the content, he just edited it.

American Psycho fucking sucks unbelievable.

the thing i remember most from AHWOSG was in the extra materials section, or whatever it was, at the end, you had to flip the book, anyway, he mentioned how he loves politicians with bleeding hearts, and ross perot’s does, it really does (something along those lines, not an exact quote). i thought that was really funny and it is the only thing that i retained. velocity, on the other hand, was much much better.

in heartbreaking work i like the gay meter in the front page and the stapler and the list of other titles he’d considered, i remember those things
barry, i want to read that story

I like the gay meter too. I wonder if he’s really that gay? or really that straight?
I also liked how NAMBLA had the cover to AHWOSG on its home page for awhile.
Wait. Why was I looking at NAMBLA?

Has anyone else who read “Lunar Park” still not come to terms with the idea of the “Terby?” Why, Bret?
