Do you have to live in Illinois to get the job or is this something someone could do via email/snail mail? Maybe this is a dumb question, but I know some editing positions that can be done remotely.

damn… nice… i almost worked as an intern for dalkey couple summers ago. ‘flunked’ the phone interview, hehe….

“responsible for the day-to-day editorial operations” — I doubt that would work well as an e-mail job, but it couldn’t hurt to ask. I’m amazed at the crappy pay vs. qualifications for jobs like this one. At least it includes medical insurance.
That’s what I made as a newspaper copy editor 25 years ago.

I think 24-28k is pretty standard for an entry-level EA position. Many people in NY have been taking these positions for ~27.5. The experience–not to mention the foothold you’d get in the industry–far outweighs the low pay, at least I’d like to think so. This is a labor of love we’re talking about.

hey jac, enjoyed “the tackiness of souls.” kudos. heard ‘somewhere’ that you took/take classes with jesse ball? is that right? do u live in chitown? lot of questions, sorry.. i live in chicago

Feel like 27.5 is livable in Chicago, but in NY would definitely not be enough to meet the ideal of having housing be only 1/3 of your expenses. But I feel like in NY you can pay people whatever you want, just like you can charge them whatever you want for grad school tuition, because people so badly want to live there. I suppose this is part of why I don’t.

  9. davidpeak

yeah, it’s definitely not comfortable–only standard. i mean, you could always pile five people into a one-bedroom and eat off the halal carts everyday. it’s not uncommon to see recent college grads living like this. there are always ways to survive. and hey, the transportation in nyc absolutely slays chicago.

  10. Lincoln

Chicago is still one of the most expensive cities in the country and if you live outside of manhattan or the hip parts of Brooklyn rents aren’t that high (and it is feasible to do so with the transportation system)

  11. stephen

chicago’s been pretty affordable for me so far, i guess. until january i was living on “not a whole lot” in wicker park and then in lakeview. probably still living on “not a whole lot” depending on one’s standards for this kind of thing.

  12. stephen

oh, and just for the record, if one got this EA position, i am nearly positive one would be living in champaign, IL, not in chicago. thought candidates would definitely want to know that. if dalkey reads this thing, please you know, set the record straight if that’s wrong

  13. mimi

But isn’t this job in Champaign?

  14. stephen

      yep, it is

  15. stephen

dalkey started in chicago but is now in champaign

Oh, stephen. I was typing while you were submitting.

      hi mimi :)

  19. Lincoln

Actually, I think it is in Champaign

  20. Zbigniev

I don’t think this has been pointed out yet, but the location is Champaign, not New York.

  21. Pete

After spending six years in school in Champaign, I can vouch that it’s a cheap place to live. And only a two hour drive from civilization.

Yes, yes, Champaign, I didn’t mean to confuse anyone. I only brought up Chicago as a point-of-reference because I live here.
