Swink is back

It’s been a long while since we heard anything from Swink. They came out of the gates huge and killed everything in 3 issues, then entered a long, I can’t even remember how many year, period of blank, in which their fate seemed to be belly up.

Well, as of this week I think, they have returned with a brand new website, and a new all-digital format. I am really glad to see them back.

Their reincarnation contains the 6-pronged strand of publishings including: fiction, poetry, and essay, plus three Swink original departments: Dead Letter Office, Wit’s End, and You are Here.

Go check out the site to see what’s up. Their subs are also open, and electronic.

Currently you can read work by Greg Ames, Brian Oliu, Edith Pearlman, Ann Cummins, and a ton more.

This is exciting. Welcome back Swink.

I was waiting for someone to open up shit-talking on swink. I wrote a thing out and almost posted it but thought I’d play nice. Anyway, yeah. Still this unexplainable and unapologetic drift from existence, and the wording at the site seems a little too it’s-all-about-us-and-we’re-wonderful considering. They jokingly still describe their process as ‘erratic’ and ‘not organized.’ This is supposed to instill faith that they won’t just disappear again?

It’s such a shame too because they published such great stuff those first few issues, stuff a lot more hardworking journals would’ve killed to publish.

you could be right. the only other la based journal I can think of is black clock, and they also have a tendency to de-exist for years and then suddenly re-emerge and openly admit to a year response time on submissions.

      aaron:

i like your diplomatic, albeit slightly passive approach to shit talk. using the “we” as opposed to the singular.

are you back in mich? what the hell are you guys doing?

I went to the launch party for swink several years ago. It was at someone’s house in LA, and a room connected with the bathroom had stacks on manuscripts on the carpet. I glanced through the stacks while waiting for the bathroom. They gave out free Swink shot glasses to anyone who ordered a subscription. There was all this excitement that Leelila was starting up a lit scene in LA. There was one more reading at the same house (minus the shot glasses and stacks of manuscripts) a year after the launch party, but then they were really gone for several years. I’ll believe they’re really back if they post to their website for the next six months.

I had a piece accepted by them two years ago; it was supposed to (finally) go up today, but they forgot to put up; then they put it up without the title.

Without the title, it’s like a punchline without a setup.

If anyone is interested, the title is “Letter To The Person Who Keeps Putting Pornographic Magazine Cutouts In My Faculty Mailbox.”

Maybe later they will remember to add the title.
