Antithesis to the article of Mr.Major.

Emerson as deity is made by people (it was actually not his intention). It’s like Duchamp with his “Fontaine”. His intention was to make ready-made anti-art. Now his anti-art became classical and is exhibitioned as art, not as urinal in museum.

Emerson with his transcedental pre-critics of consumer society is all we need. Especially because he doesn’t criticize the society of consumers, but the humans eternal and senseless need to have something. Because if one has something, he will want something more to this something. And fractalization of useless needs is one of the neat reasons for our senseless decay.

And his gift theory is priceless.

“Emerson has no essence to give?” That’s the essence he gives us, that’s why he’s nice guy.

If these two guys are too stupid to teach Emerson, then they should have the decency to resign their positions. I feel like we see more and more of this all the time– academics broadcasting their incompetence like it’s a fucking merit badge. Understandable, I guess, in Sarah Palin’s America (the same America, incidentally, where the new Diesel jeans ad slogan is BE STUPID) that even professors would want to get in on the action, but this really grosses me out.

“Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds” or something like that, right? If Emerson was alive he could dispense with these guys in a couple of sentences.

I’m still hoping the whole thing was a joke.

Another pissed off commenter (other than yours truly, that is) over in the Chronicle’s comments thread points people interested in Emerson to this long Christopher Lydon interview with Harold Bloom, conducted on the occasion of Emerson’s bicentennial.

I think we are only about 5 years away from English departments totally caving to cultural studies and it will be easier to find a class studying pogs and 80s cartoons hows than Milton of Faulkner.

Can’t wait to get into these. I have to admit, this turn of phrase by the commenter “hurley” made me laugh a little:

      “Modern Emersonians”

I count myself lucky to have been taught Emerson by Dr. Habich at Ball State. Dude knows his shit about Emerson/transcendentalism/-ists. You ever have him for American Lit, Dan or Nate?

For those interested in other interviews with Bloom by Lydon search around the site, he’s done several outside of these dealing specifically with Emerson. But with Bloom Emerson is always in the air anyways.
