Alexis Orgera—
Very Short List just sent me a link to a site that chronicals reusable cover art in historical novels. I am strangely and inexplicably fascinated by the recycling. I think it’s John Berger in Ways of Seeing who talks about how reproductions have changed the way we see art. Repetition as its own artform. I’m sure a boatload of folks have made that observation, come to think of it.
What about the book called Kleopatra and the one called Scheherazade with the same black-veiled woman on the cover?
and what about those same two books being released in the same year?! I’d be embarrassed if I was either of those authors. I realize they were released in different countries, but still.

actually, maybe the publishers should be embarrassed, the authors infuriated.

Makes me feel like someone is half-assing their job and name me a job where someone doesn’t halfass, eventually.
Beauty of the Net. To catch halfasses.
Just one of its moral duties.
(The other is porn. It needs to be available)

This is rad. Thanks, Alexis.

Granted, most, not all of those covers are pretty uninspired, but isn’t it pretty cool that people would use the same image again and again?

There’s something there piquing my interest, something about repetition and recycling, but I can’t put my finger on it. And, yeah, most of those covers are just boring–but they’ve taken a piece of already-existing artwork and made it into the face of the book.
