Anna Karenina. Borrowed it from a girl who then got engaged to a millionaire and now just goes skiing and rides horses or something. Anybody who wants to lend me books and not ask for them back, let me know.

I just (ahem) borrowed “The Shadow of the Wind” by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I started reading it in the library of this vacation spot I visited over the weekend and I didn’t want to stop. The writing style reminds me of Borges and Marquez. I’d been meaning to check out this novel for years, and there it was, calling me, absurdly out of its element among yoga, meditation and psychology volumes from the ’70s. It was even misfiled in the non-fiction section, c’mon…
Thing is, I’ve promised myself that while I may or may not return it next time I go to this place, I *will* stack that spotty library with a number of worthy titles currently piled up in my closet. Subjective rationale? Moral relativism? Whatever… it’s a good book so far.

I stole a roommate’s copy of the 1977 paperback edition of “Moosewood Cookbook” because of the inscription in it. The inscription:
“To ——–, With mixed emotions (on the border between love and affection). ——–, 12/27/81.”

Animal Ghost Stories. I borrowed it from my best friend in the 4th grade and never gave it back. He had to pay the public library for it.
It’s pretty scary.

when i was an undergrad, a friend stole the library’s only copy of the rare, out-of-print design tome, s, m, l, xl, by koolhaas and mau.
friend: “i love it and appreciate it more than anyone else, and this is the only way i will be able to have it — therefore, i must steal it.”
a year later it was reprinted and available in bookstores. i asked her, was she going to give back the stolen copy?
friend: “hell no. now they can just buy a new one.”

My name is Yvette Hernandez and a couple of weeks after David Foster Wallace died I asked one of my co-workers if I could borrow his copies of Consider the Lobster and Oblivion. Three months later my co-worker asked me if he could have his books back and I said no. I said I had lost the books during a move. The truth is that I have never read the books. And I don’t plan on ever reading them. The reason I took the books is because I did not like my co-worker. I thought he was a creep. He made fun of my lazy eye and referred to me as a Mexican, even though I am not from Mexico.

The February Towers as a kid. First book that was truly a mystery to me, truly strange and new and parallel worlds and all of that. I still have it. I was obsessed with it–and good thing, because it’s out of print now.
Same story with The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I mean Noel) by Ellen Raskin.

“Fuck You Heroes,” by Glen E. Friedman. I was helping a girl move, and I saw it at the top of a box of junk, so I nudged it out of the box and under the front seat of my truck as she went back into the apartment to get something. I figured it was only fair – I found a bunch of my old t-shirts and some albums that belonged to me in her stuff as we packed up my truck.

To make it better, I really do, honestly, plan to give it back. Maybe after I read it one more time.

This is funny. It’d be funnier if it were true. It’s not b/c a) DFW fans don’t lend out their books; b) if said fans did, they’d never lend two at a time; c) the story seems to crack on how some DFW fans, so-called, don’t really read his books. Come to think of it, maybe this is perfect as is.

I let a friend borrow “The Fuck Up” by Nersessian and never got it back. No big loss. I recently lent out “God Hates Us All,” and knowing the friend I lent it to, I probably will not see that one again, either. I will say that I have a ton of Garfield comics that belonged to the library. They’re twenty some odd years delinquent.

i borrowed catcher in the rye from my teacher when i was in 10th grade and i still have that book. to elevate this to an even higher level of cliche, the book is worn to shit now due to constant re-reading back then and she probably wouldn’t even recognize it if i tried to return it 7 years later.
i’m still down overall from books i’ve lent out and not received back, though in nearly every case it was a book i didn’t REALLY want back.

University: The Devastation of the Indies by Casas (the margins were full of back and forth arguments between students who believed Casas and students who thought he was shitting on Latin America and tarnishing Spain, etc. Really cool.
