Zach German’s books i read in 2010 blog is pretty funny or fun, e.g. “how did i like it: i didn’t like it. i really didn’t feel like i got anything out of it. i guess i learned the names of a lot of people, whose wikipedias i looked at after not recognizing them in the poems. i feel like with killian’s style of poetry it is difficult for me to know whether it is good or bad; like i assume killian is a ‘good’ writer, but i feel even if a ‘bad’ writer wrote some poems in this book’s style i would probably take them the same way, idk. that being said i feel like i would like him if i met him….”

where did I find it: this blog post
where did I read it: My mom’s boyfriend’s house where the chickens are loose, but I think that’s okay.
what was I doing while I read it: eating microwaved food, waiting for it to be time to collect eggs from the chickens and feed the cat

what is it about: A hipster writer with a book out wanted to chronicle the books he read this year.

how did i like it: It was okay. While I read it, I ate some terrible frozen food. Both the blog and the food are disposable. Read all of the post about Lipsyte. Got borderline uncomfortable because I want to rub Sam on the head some day and if he knew I had read the review, he might not let me do that. After that review, I skimmed the others but mostly looked at photos of German without his shirt on. Kind of weird. Is this in style?

Would I revisit the blog: Probably but only if someone tweets a link to it or htmlgiant features it again.

i am pretty into this blog. does german have a job? not that i think he reads super fast or anything, i mean maybe he does, but if he does i guess i do too, but i ask because, like, i also used to follow his purchases blog or whatever and it seems like he spends a lot of money everyday or something (maybe it’s a normal amount, who knows), and i wondered if it was all from book profits or if like he has to do something stupid like the rest of us. i don’t know maybe i should ask him. i like that all of his books almost are from libraries.

After I made my comment above, I wanted to change it. Maybe he just reads at a normal rate but reads for a long time. I don’t know. I was just impressed that many of the books he starts one day and finishes the next day. That seemed impressive or something. I don’t know.

I’m pretty sure ZG has a job. I think he used to be a dog walker and used to work at a thrift store. Maybe he still does one or both of those things.

i agree it’s funny. but that thing about kevin killian is so pointless, about the ‘good’ or ‘bad’ writer thing. it’s funny if it’s a joke, kind of, but i don’t really get it. what on earth is a bad/good writer. seems like, from reading this blog, Zachary German is kind of a “bad” reader. But I like his writing a lot.

  24. BAC

he probably doesn’t have a job. that aids speedy reading.

i found it strange that zg didn’t like lunch poems. i can’t imagine the tao school of poetry existing without o’hara existing before. not that the two are all that similar. i just think o’hara/berrigan/brainard/etc. sort of created a new mode of casuality in poetry that hadn’t existed before, a trait that become a part of the tao school (of poetry moreso than fiction).

  28. MM

Opposite of impressed, it exhumes my humility, dredges out the deprecations I owe my meandering mind. To the stacks of books i hardly slither thru: “i fail dominion, you affiance dust, so now i sneeze.” Quoth this brilliant ecoterrorist i met on Amtrak, months before 9/11 forced him to deport himself back to Lux before the Bushies did: “fuck grad school, get a stack of books and go sit on the beach and hammer through them in one summer. then let’s talk.” Nine years later, only one of his rec’s is checked. How do I swallow this fate, that I will always be under-erudite?

(nevertheless, i applaud this person, for his diligence and too the curious candor of his consumption.)

  29. OnTheRoad

Zack Germany is a no-talent dweeb.

Tao school? Wow. I’d hate to be a student there.

  34. daniel bailey

obviously i don’t mean school as in “educational institution.”

i’d hate to have king kong or any of the known bundy’s as students.

      wink.

(though i notice there’s a wikipedia page for a “king kong bundy.” if you are the real “king kong bundy,” then, hello, questionably famous person. i doubt it is actually you. also, why am i still awake at this hour?)

  35. Pemulis

Someone tell me how to read big novels in a few measly hours…I would like to do that, too.
