A Pixel Art Documentary by Simon Cottee

Last May, Blake posted a short meditation on video game art, particularly Jason Rohrer’s Passage, and how the constraints Rohrer and others write under can create new experiences in video games. If you liked that post, consider watching Simon Cottee‘s pixel art documentary, which explores how and why the pixel style has moved beyond indie video games and into visual art, music, and so on. Makes me miss my NES.

im kinda freaked out by the people NOT mentioned in this thing. No Paper Rad. No Cory Archangel. He founded BEIGE in like, ’98. All the stuff they did pre-dates these pieces by a lot. Archangel was already in the Whitney Biannual before any of the pieces in this little film were even made.

the cool thing about that guy is that he hacked the actual nes cartridges then played them through the systems. He didnt just emulate the aesthetics in photoshop or something. you can find blawgs online somewhere in the ass of the internet showing you how to make the cartridges step by step.
