Sonnets for Saturday

I googled sonnet in images and a million picture of this lady came up.

I googled "sonnet" in images and a million pictures of this lady came up.

I briefly studied poetry with William “Bill” Matthews eons ago. I liked him very much. I was a bad poet. He made us write sonnets. I wrote one that narrates a mother teaching her daughter how to masturbate in the shower. He didn’t like it. He didn’t like much of my work, and yet, we liked each other. After the jump is my sonnet. Feel free to share your bad sonnets in the comment section.

If you unscrew the shower head, daughter

wetness will pour wildly, rather than spray

soft, it will fall in a straight line, the water

comes out swift and mean – Learn the water’s way

my pretty girl, Let me show you the flow

of things, the many manipulations –

Objects and certain elements can know

many forms -Discover ripe elations

found from changing the water’s sweet pressure-

Let it pound on your flesh rather than sprinkle

Take it unadulterated – I’m sure

once tried this way, you’ll never let tinkle

the diffused water –  You’ll convert to sending

water gushing, hard flow on you ending.

Here is my sonet – much more worster, as it can be imagined. Because I’m not native English speaker, and I’m tired at the moment (in Germany is 3:30 in the night), and I’m overwhelmed by the graphic revelation above. So enjoy my atrocity.

‘Tis better to be hot, than calm insteed,
To boast with precious body’s worth adopting.
To watch, to see, to feel the Trieb, the need,
To touch etcetera is pretty opting.

The mountains of ivory are vast,
      They’re overblowing my exhausted mind.
The future, presence and the past
Is meaningless in light of suchlike kind.

My heart avoids the knocking for a while,
Am I Oedipus? Why those charismatic
      Appearance of this enchanted smile
In combination with… you know… is so ecstatic?

And silence fills the ill-lit rooms of mine.
I need the light, the air, the love, the wine.

I dug it. I don’t dig half-rhymes or soft rhymes, but I like this. I think if you were to wrap the entire thing in quotes, and add more consistent punctuation (like periods, and make some lines simple statements), you’d have a potent piece right here. I think you’re in the vein of some perverted Robert Frost type of work.

      Oh, Raspberries

      Raspberries blow out your nose
      so I’m worried there’s something
you aren’t telling me. Your trip to New Mexico
was uneventful, you said. Is there itching
like leprosy? I heard that stuff
is contagious. Maybe just cheek kisses
from now on. Don’t worry, you still
look real fine to me. Can I keep your tissues?
I really love the smell of fresh fruit.

      Dreaming of people eating pieces
of me might not be so bad. You always
seemed the business type. How about a
mom and pop operation? Everyone loves
organic. Remember, “homegrown” if anyone asks.

I liked Bill Matthews–signed his book with a drawing of a little martini glass. I don’t know from sonnets. Good luck and all.
