Been following his blog for awhile, bought all the books. This is the first time I’ve seen a glimpse of him as a real person. He seems like he has an endless supply of energy with which to create. I raise my glass to his future endeavors.
That final comment: “Is this awesome or is this pathetic…?” Let that sentiment linger in the air a bit… That sums up pretty much everything I wonder about Sam Pink. David Letterman has this genius skit that he does sometimes called “Is This Something.” Basically, he’ll have, for example, a lady riding a horse while also twirling a baton and whistling “Home on the Range,” and the audience votes by applause as to whether or not this IS or IS NOT something. It’s a brilliant skit of course because it is ridiculous how far people are willing to go to proclaim bull shit art, or to claim something as worthwhile and special when it clearly is nothing. I know this has a lot to do with post modern thought, and I know David Letterman is aware of how that can be a slippery, dangerous thing; I’m just not convinced that Mr. Pink is…
Sam says something like, “why wouldn’t you just start writing stuff and putting it up on the internet?” Why isn’t the answer “because it’s a waste of time?” Why do people want to read it? Seriously, please tell me. I’m not trying to be an ass hole. Please tell me why we are reading his stuff? Samuel, why are we reading your stuff? When there are libraries overflowing with material that is profound and moving and enlightening and engaging, stuff we don’t have to stop and ask ourselves, “is this something?” why does anyone waste time doing what you are doing and/or reading what you are making? Why should we care?
