I’m not saying it’s fair or right, but I think the reality is that no one wants to pay shipping fees online anymore. I’m always a little shocked by someone trying to make me, even though I know I shouldn’t be, and that it’s sort of unfair for me to always expect the publisher or retailer to eat the shipping.
I think it’s sort of a trade: Either the publisher can pay the three dollars, or they can give amazon 50% of the cover price and let them pay it. Seems like you’re always better off going with free shipping.

I have nothing against SPD, per se, but they’re shipping situation is strange. It’s 4.50 and they ship to you in this big box with packing peanuts. I suppose I appreciate the care they’re taking with the books, but really? A cardboard box the size of a table dictionary filled with packing peanuts for a 50 page book of poetry?

I charge $1 shipping for each order.
Here’s one thing a Postal clerk told me recently: They still offer “book rate” or “media mail” but only if you ask specifically. In other words, they’ll run down the prices: first class, priority, overnight, etc., but they won’t tell you the book rate price unless you ask. Weird.

This is the ol’ Ebay move–5 bucks for fucking “handling,” whatever that may be. And I bet Ebay, this little game, spreads into other arenas. You give people a gray area and they are gonna try to get that extra nickel.
The response is clear. People on Ebay who say, Guess what? I ship for free.
So, I look for that now and have a visceral reaction to seeing sellers who don’t. Doesn’t mean I won’t buy that item, I just flinch first.

They’ll find one way or another to screw you. You can pay $5 for a book and get “free” shipping, or pay $1 for a book and pay $4 shipping, and every possible permutation in between. I do hate it when people charger you a ridiculous price for shipping and then it shows up with $1.64 and media mail slathered on it, or some other dumb ass move, like the aforementioned giant box of foam peanuts. In the end, the consumer (or reader) will choose to come back or not.

I’m not sure about the $4.50 for shipping, who is charging it, or if that’s for shipping in the lower 48 states…but if so, it should probably be cheaper. I think it’s fair for publishers to charge cover + shipping (especially if they use a flat rate, like priority), such that they don’t get brutalized when they sell a copy overseas. I’d think the overseas shipping ($8+ to Europe!) is why publishers ask customers to pay…

Amazon’s free shipping barely fits in my mouth.

i don’t charge shipping fees cause i want some incentive for customers to buy from me instead of amazon.
media mail shipping is less than $3 anyway
Why am I simultaneously chuckling and blushing?

Is it true that you can’t use media mail if your book has any advertisements in it?

Sounds like a health issue
talk to your doctor about paying $4.50 for shipping on a book from the publisher’s website

I agree with you about the trade. For PG, I sell the book cheaper and include free shipping and still make more per book.
It’s just wrong for a publisher to make money on shipping. You can charge as much as you want for the book, but don’t gouge the shipping.

Also–Powell’s has good shipping rates.
