My wife and I just bought a puppy. We will bring him home on December 13th. We named him Memphis.

So cute, what kind? We’re looking into getting a puppy for just after Xmas for my twins (six years old, boy and girl). We were thinking Beagle or Terrier. Something smaller, no long hair (wife’s allergies).

I once knew a guy who had an Australian Shepherd and it went everywhere with him, he was a hippy kind of guy. The dog was so smart the owner could just tell the dog to do something, like “Go sit down” or “go get your frisbee” or “leave me alone” and the dog would do it. This isn’t that amazing but the guy would just talk in his normal voice like talking to another person, no hand signals, no elevation or inflection of voice, nothing. He just “talked” to the dog and the dog understood.

yeah, mather. we hope to be able to train him well. ill have a lot of time with him next yr. but, im also a pushover soooooo, we’ll see.

My point is they are very smart and learn quick, so training is relatively easy and fairly limitless (for dogs). Only problem is they have a lot of energy. I hope you live in the country.

Aussies are known to be a very smart breed. The working breeds, which have been deliberately bred to work alongside man, tend to be the “smartest” in this way.

He looks almost exactly like my border collie mutt when she was a puppy (I’ll send you a photo.) I have an australian shepherd, too – she’s a ‘lethal white’ – mis-bred double merle, so she’s deaf, and can kill. They’re great dogs.

thats how my golden retriever xeno was. I’d talk to him like a person and he’d get me right off the bat. A friends girlfriend had a similar dog, a pit. He’d tell the dog “get the can!” and the dog would go pick up a can.
