This terrifies me. I cannot explain why.

God I’d love to see that. Well Cavett blogs for the NYT, so why don’t we just ask him?

he may not have rights?
i checked amazon and the lish stuff isn’t part of the dvd collection.
i’m looking at resources at work. i have lots of hollywood/tv resources but i’m not sure where which to use to try to find something like this.

Don’t be discouraged! I think we can do it. We must send out a call, far and wide.
I am going to see if I can write to Dick Cavett.

matthew,
no i am not stopping. this is the kind of thing that gets me hard.
puzzles are fun to me. this is a puzzle.
i searched for 3 days trying to find some weird movie for blake once simply because he mentioned it on his blog.
i got nothing better to do while working.
i am going to say i think writing dick may end up being the only way. from what i have read he holds tight reigns on his shows.
but most of the shows people want are all from the 70s. the bobby fisher interview in the 90s being the exception.
i kind of looked around. is there ANY video of lish?

Gordon does talk a lot about Merv Griffin in the great story, For Jerome–With Love and Kisses. Is Cavett mentioned in any of his stories? Seems like Justin might know this. His memory is younger than my memory.

No, nothing about Cavett springs to mind. But like I say, Cavett blogs for the NYT, and he already got them to post one old video from his show– the Updike/Cheever episode, which we talked about a few weeks ago. I think asking him can’t hurt. At the very least, maybe he knows where we can get it.

I commented on the latest post, but as it is 194th, I’m thinking I will have to try harder.
Does anyone live next door to Dick Cavett?

I live next door to Frank Bluss, who knows Ken Jenkins, who once met Woody Allen, who knows Dick Cavett. Does that count?

Michael Hemmingson’s book Gordon Lish and His Influence on 20th Century American Literature is coming out this year from Routledge. He might be the guy to ask. Good luck.

On a related note, if people are still reading: would someone like to upload Lish’s audio commentary for the Wonder Showzen episode, “Patience”…? Sounds like fun – http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/20854/wonder-showzen-season-1/ and will be easier to attain than the Cavett vid (I see there’s a copy of that in Lish’s archive at Bloomington…)
it seems to be here, along w/ lish’s belt lul
