NYPL Young Lions Announcement
Every year, the New York Public Library & Ethan Hawke award $25k to a writer under 35 based on a book she published the previous year. Here’s the full press release. Here is this year’s list:
Citrus County by John Brandon (McSweeney’s)
Vida by Patricia Engel (Grove Press)
The Instructions by Adam Levin (McSweeney’s)
Death Is Not an Option by Suzanne Rivecca (W.W. Norton & Company)
Kapitoil by Teddy Wayne (Harper Perennial)
What do you think about this list? What have you read on this list? Who “deserves” it? Who’s missing? What was your favorite book published in 2010 written by a writer under 35?

John Brandon, absolutely. That book was beautiful and wise.

Thinking someone missed a great April Fools opportunity here.
Glad to see Levin is on the list. I might have included Patrick Somerville and / or Lindsay Hunter, as well. (That is, if short story collections are permissible entries and Patrick Somerville is under 35, which I’m pretty sure he is). Also really liked Amelia Gray and Alissa Nutting in 2010.

I second both Amelia Gray and Alissa Nutting. Is Matt Bell under 35? If so, add him too.
I’d put Danielle Evans on that list for Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self. I think she’s under 35.
If I haven’t said it already, thanks for recommending that book. It was one of my favorites from last year, for sure.
