      My “big picture” idea of psychoanalysis is something like allowing the person to create their own personally significant mythology and then making them aware of how it is personally significant… by giving them the space and authority to make the discovery on their own, not directly “telling” them “what it means”.

      Lacan’s idea of the unconscious being structured like how language is structured would allow the odd “happy accident” of overlap, found usually in the metaphor (not always obvious), which would be the X’s on the map to dig for gold… but the part that I find interesting is that if this is the case, the unconscious should then both effect how we talk and how we talk effect should effect the unconscious, so this is an endless cycle-process. For Lacan the “unconscious” is both the signified of language and the signifier for something… else… which cannot really be approached. Freud’s Id is here a middle term, some halfbreed, like in Alien Ressurection with those weird Sigournaliens. Which is way more scary than it just being all these impulsive drives…
