Grow a spine

Artist Jane Mount paints other people’s bookshelves in her wonderfully playful and strikingly accurate “Ideal Bookshelf” series. That they are (I presume) actual collections and not imaginings, augments the idea of what is “ideal.” A quick click through is very enjoyable. Book designers may find it very instructive how identifiable a book’s spine is, a condensed version of the cover’s visual syntax.

Wow, for some reason I find these incredibly, well, cool. They’re just so nice to look at. Back before I decided I had to stay put for a while, I would always take a picture of my own bookshelf before moving house. It seemed important (to me) as a kind of record. This takes that idea – the weird happenstance of one book after another on a shelf – to another level.

all of these book spines are “new” covers. if i am the only person buying used books in america why do i sometimes still have to spend so much money on them.
